There are generally two reasons why people want to save energy:

  • To spend less money on their bills
  • To help the environment by reducing their carbon footprint

Whatever your reason is for trying to reduce the amount of energy you use, the result is that by using less, you will be doing both; saving money and helping the environment. This is great for everyone.

What is the best thing to do to lower energy bills?

Insulate your home

It may sound obvious but loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and double glazing can make a huge difference to keeping a house warm for less. There are also grants available from the government to help pay for insulating your home. Please visit the GOV.UK Green Deal guide for further details.

Stop drafts

Cold drafts mean you are wasting energy. Use draft excluders around doors and windows and always draw the curtains in the evening to help keep the heat in.

Turn down your thermostat

Make sure you are using the correct heating controls and consider turning the thermostat down by one or two degrees. This could save you up to 10% on your heating bill and it is unlikely you will notice the change in the thermostat setting.

Use energy saving appliances

energy saving recommendedTry and use AAA energy rated household appliances whenever you can. Also look out for The Energy Saving Trust Recommended label on home appliances. This lets you know the product is the most energy efficient in the market. Electronics and home entertainment products also carry The Energy Saving Trust Recommended label so look out for this when buying new equipment.

Switch off electronic equipment

A lot of home electronic products still use a significant amount of energy when they are in standby mode. Turning them off instead of leaving them on standby will save energy and money. Leaving mobile phones and laptops on charge wastes energy – remember to unplug the chargers

Use energy efficient light bulbs

This is one of the easiest ways to save energy and money. Replacing your existing light bulbs with energy efficient ones will make an immediate difference and they last up to ten times longer. Don't forget to turn lights off that are not being used.

Everyday changes you can make

  • Turning your home electronics and entertainment products off instead of leaving them on standby will reduce the amount of energy they use. Unplug chargers when they are not being used
  • Swap your old light bulbs for new energy efficient ones. Turn lights off that are not being used
  • Make sure you have set the heating and hot water timing so it is only on when you need it. When you go away on holiday turn the thermostat down to a low setting. Try turning your thermostat down by one degree
  • Closing your curtains in the evening will stop heat escaping through the windows. Get rid of drafts around doors and windows
  • Don't boil a full kettle if you only need enough hot water for a cup of tea (but make sure the element is covered if it is an electric kettle)
  • Always do full loads when using the dishwasher, washing machine or tumble dryer – full loads are more efficient than half loads


New Energy Saving Advice Service launched

On Monday 2nd April 2012, The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced the launch of a new Energy Saving Advice Service.

Consumers can access the Advice Service by calling 0300 123 1234

or by visiting the Energy Help section of GOV.UK.

This service is aimed at providing advice to households and businesses on existing Energy Efficiency and Microgeneration schemes and will go on to play a crucial role in providing independent and impartial advice to consumers including the Green Deal.

The Advice Service is being delivered by the Energy Saving Trust in partnership with Careline Services. Details about the Advice Service can be found in the Department of Energy and Climate Change press release.

What is the best thing we can do to help the environment?

In general, you should first look at your own energy consumption and consider energy efficiency measures and the efficient use of appliances as we've explained above.

Another option is to use energy from renewable sources. This will help reduce your carbon footprint by using energy that is generated with less impact on the environment.

  • This could include installing solar panels on your roof to help reduce the amount of electricity you buy from your supplier. Any small renewable technology is covered under the Governments Feed In Tariff scheme – further details can be found on our Renewables page.
  • Another option is to buy low carbon energy from your supplier that is generated from renewable technology. iSupplyEnergy will be providing these low carbon products as part of its continued product development and they will be available in the near future.
  • A further option would be to consider offsetting the carbon you produce as a result of your energy consumption by investing in schemes that promote carbon reduction. This can be done in some cases directly with the schemes or indirectly by purchasing Quality Assurance Scheme or Gold Certificate carbon offsets. Further details can be found on the GOV.UK website.
